MATCH REPORT

Fujitsu Frontiers began their 2026 X-League Premier campaign with a commanding 23–0 victory over the Tokyo Gas Creators at Fujitsu Stadium Kawasaki.

For Fujitsu, the opener carried extra meaning after falling short of the Rice Bowl title last season. The Frontiers entered 2026 determined to reclaim their place at the top of Japanese football, and Sunday’s performance showed a team playing with both urgency and balance.

Quarterback Tsubasa Takagi led the offense efficiently, completing 24 of 30 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. His connection with Grant Sumajie proved especially dangerous, as the receiver finished with 81 yards and a touchdown while earning MVP honors.

Fujitsu controlled the game through the air, recording 255 passing yards and 19 first downs while limiting Tokyo Gas to just 97 passing yards and nine total first downs. The defense was equally dominant, forcing an interception and shutting the Creators out across all four quarters.

Tokyo Gas, meanwhile, entered the season looking to prove they could challenge the league’s established powers after showing flashes of competitiveness in 2025. The Creators moved the ball at times—particularly during a long third-quarter drive—but failed to capitalize, missing all three field-goal attempts.

The contrast between the teams ultimately came down to execution. Fujitsu converted key fourth downs, avoided costly mistakes, and consistently finished drives, while Tokyo Gas struggled to sustain momentum in scoring territory.

For the Frontiers, the victory was more than just a season-opening win. It was an early statement from a team determined to return to championship form in 2026.
