Japan Overpower Qatar 123–70 as Hachimura Leads Dominant World Cup Qualifying Win

TOKYO, Japan — Japan delivered one of its most dominant performances of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, defeating Qatar 123–70 at Toyota Arena Tokyo on August 31.

Playing in front of 9,153 fans, Japan controlled the game from the opening minutes and never allowed Qatar to take the lead, completing a perfect two-game sweep in Window 4 and improving to 6–2 in Group F.

Japan immediately established the tempo with an explosive first quarter. Rui Hachimura and Keisei Tominaga provided the early scoring punch as the hosts raced to a 29–11 advantage after the opening ten minutes.

Qatar responded with 23 points in the second quarter, but Japan remained firmly in command and entered halftime ahead 53–34.

The decisive stretch came after the break.

Japan erupted for 40 points in the third quarter while limiting Qatar to just 11, turning a comfortable advantage into a commanding 93–45 lead. The hosts added another 30 points in the final period to complete the 53-point victory.

Japan shot 59 percent from the field and 52.6 percent from three-point range, knocking down 20 three-pointers as a team. The 20 made threes tied the third-highest total in Asian Qualifiers history.

The Japanese offense also produced 39 assists, the second-highest single-game total in the history of the Asian Qualifiers.

Hachimura Sets the Tone

Hachimura was at the center of Japan’s dominant performance.

The NBA forward delivered a spectacular all-around outing, combining elite perimeter shooting with playmaking and defensive impact. He hit six three-pointers while also contributing six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Hachimura’s early shooting helped Japan immediately seize control of the contest, including a perfect start from beyond the arc during the first half.

Tominaga provided another major scoring threat from the perimeter, while Joshua Hawkinson contributed 16 points and eight rebounds.

Yuta Watanabe added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench, and Yudai Nishida also reached double figures with 11 points.

Yuki Kawamura orchestrated the offense with 10 assists as Japan consistently created high-quality opportunities through rapid ball movement and spacing.

Complete Team Performance

Perhaps the most impressive element of the victory was not simply the final margin, but the balance of Japan’s performance.

Hachimura and Kawamura brought additional star power to an already established core, while the rest of the roster continued to execute their individual roles.

Japan’s combination of outside shooting, transition offense and unselfish ball movement overwhelmed Qatar throughout the night.

The hosts led for virtually the entire contest and produced a 15–0 scoring run at their peak, eventually building their advantage to more than 50 points.

For Qatar, Abdulla Mousa led the scoring with 14 points, but the 2027 World Cup hosts were unable to contain Japan’s relentless offensive attack.

Japan Strengthen Their Position in Group F

With the victory, Japan completed Window 4 with two wins and improved to 6–2 in the second-round Group F standings.

The result further strengthened Japan’s position in the race for qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027.

Qatar have already secured their place in the World Cup as tournament hosts, while Japan continue to pursue one of the qualification spots available through the Asian Qualifiers.

After scoring 123 points, hitting 20 three-pointers and recording 39 assists, Japan’s performance in Tokyo provided another indication of the offensive potential of a national team increasingly capable of combining individual talent with collective execution.
