MATCH REPORT

Japan surrendered a seven-point halftime lead in a 34-20 defeat, ending its bid to secure a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games through the world championship.

DÜSSELDORF, Germany — August 14, 2026 — Japan’s women’s national flag football team missed the opportunity to secure qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games at the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships after suffering a 34-20 comeback defeat to Canada.

Japan held a 20-13 lead at halftime in its final Group D game but was unable to add to its score after the break. Canada responded with 21 unanswered points in the second half to complete the comeback and remain undefeated in the group.

The result left Japan third in Group D with a 1-2 record, behind Canada and Panama. Canada finished first at 3-0, while Panama placed second at 2-1. Japan’s only group-stage victory was a convincing 32-0 win over Brazil.

With only the top two teams from each group advancing to the championship bracket, Japan moved into the placement round and was eliminated from contention for one of the Olympic qualification places available at the tournament.

The United States has already qualified automatically for Los Angeles 2028 as the host nation. At the world championship, the two highest-finishing teams other than the United States earn Olympic berths. The remaining three places in both the men’s and women’s tournaments will be decided at the final qualification event scheduled for June 2028, leaving Japan with another route to the Games.
