DÜSSELDORF, Germany — August 14, 2026 — Japan’s men’s flag football team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championship after finishing first in Group B with an unbeaten record.

World No. 7 Japan defeated Canada 37-28 before edging world No. 2 Austria 43-42 in a thrilling group-stage finale. Combined with a forfeit victory over Nigeria, which withdrew from the tournament, Japan finished with a 3-0 record.

Japan will face six-time defending champion United States in the quarterfinals on August 15.

Against Austria, quarterback Takehito Taniguchi opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Riki Matsui. The two teams then traded scores throughout a high-powered contest, with Japan holding a narrow 22-20 advantage at halftime.

Taniguchi delivered an outstanding performance, throwing six touchdown passes as Japan continued to match Austria score for score. With Austria threatening to complete a late comeback, defensive back Kento Nishida intercepted the ball to end the final drive and secure the one-point victory.

Earlier in the day, Japan produced another strong offensive display against Canada. The Japanese team built a commanding 30-14 halftime lead before holding off Canada in the second half.

Wide receiver Kodai Okumura played a central role in the victory, catching three touchdown passes as Japan claimed a 37-28 win. Canada outscored Japan 14-7 after halftime, but Japan’s early advantage proved decisive.

Canada finished second in Group B with a 2-1 record, followed by Austria at 1-2. Nigeria was placed fourth after withdrawing from the competition.

Japan’s quarterfinal against the United States represents its biggest challenge of the tournament so far. The Americans entered the championship seeking a sixth consecutive world title.

The tournament also serves as part of the qualification process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, where flag football will make its Olympic debut. Excluding host nation United States, the two highest-finishing men’s and women’s teams will secure Olympic berths.

A victory over the United States would send Japan into the semifinals. Japan would then need to win its semifinal to guarantee a place in the championship game and secure qualification for Los Angeles 2028.

In the women’s competition, Japan finished third in Group D after suffering a 34-20 comeback loss to Canada. Japan led 20-13 at halftime but was held scoreless in the second half as Canada scored 21 unanswered points.

The result moved Japan into the ninth-to-16th-place classification round, ending its opportunity to earn an Olympic berth at this championship. Japan responded with a 40-21 victory over France and will next face Italy in the ninth-to-12th-place classification round.
