England Holds Off Puerto Rico for 15–8 Victory in Pool C

Sofia Wise scored three goals as England maintained control through all four quarters to secure a 15–8 win over Puerto Rico at the 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship.

England defeated Puerto Rico 15–8 in Pool C action at the 2026 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship on July 25 at Oi Stadium in Tokyo.

England established an early lead and remained in front throughout the contest, but Puerto Rico continued to apply pressure and prevented the game from becoming one-sided.

Sofia Wise led England with three goals and one assist, while Emily Nalls, Emma Savage and Teagan Scott each scored twice. Puerto Rico was led by Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw, who recorded a hat trick.

England Builds an Early Advantage

England opened the game with three unanswered goals.

Emma Savage scored the first goal with 10:11 remaining in the opening quarter before Teagan Scott doubled the lead. Milly Home added England’s third goal as the first period ended 3–0.

Puerto Rico created opportunities during the quarter, but England goalkeeper Britt Read and the defensive unit kept the opposition scoreless through the opening 15 minutes.

England extended its advantage early in the second quarter when Jordan Carr finished from a Sofia Wise assist.

Graciela Kerr scored Puerto Rico’s first goal from a free-position opportunity, but Savage quickly answered with her second goal of the game to restore England’s four-goal lead.

Lucia Nash-Lagares then found the net for Puerto Rico before Nalls scored twice late in the half. Rodriguez-Shaw struck with 23 seconds remaining, but Nalls responded just 11 seconds later to give England a 7–3 halftime advantage.

Puerto Rico Continues to Compete

Megan Whittle opened the third-quarter scoring for England before Nash-Lagares answered with her second goal.

Scott and Wise then scored in succession, pushing England’s lead to 10–4.

Rodriguez-Shaw responded for Puerto Rico, but Annie Mather restored England’s six-goal advantage. Sofia Herrera converted a free-position opportunity with one second remaining in the period, reducing the deficit to 11–6 entering the final quarter.

Puerto Rico continued to challenge England in the fourth.

Rodriguez-Shaw completed her hat trick with a free-position goal to make the score 11–7. England responded decisively as Wise scored twice in less than two minutes, completing her hat trick and extending the lead to six.

Isa Henson-Vendrell added Puerto Rico’s final goal before Claire Faram and Olivia Wimpenny scored late to complete England’s 15–8 victory.

Wise Leads a Balanced England Attack

Wise finished with a team-high four points from three goals and one assist.

Savage contributed two goals and one assist, while Nalls and Scott each scored twice. Carr and Whittle both recorded one goal and one assist.

England received goals from 10 different players, demonstrating the depth of its attacking unit.

England converted 15 of its 28 shots for a shooting percentage of 53.6 percent and placed 20 attempts on goal. The team also recorded five assists.

The draw circle played an important role in England’s control of the game. England won 16 of the 27 draw controls, with Anna Viglione repeatedly securing possession during the middle quarters.

Read played the full game in goal and made seven saves from 15 shots on target.

Puerto Rico Shows Resilience

Rodriguez-Shaw led Puerto Rico with three goals.

Nash-Lagares scored twice, while Kerr, Herrera and Henson-Vendrell each added one goal. Bri Carrasquillo recorded Puerto Rico’s only assist.

Puerto Rico finished with eight goals from 21 shots and placed 15 attempts on target. The team won 11 draw controls and committed nine turnovers, three fewer than England.

Goalkeepers Ailani Ubarry and Isabel Gautreaux shared duties and combined for five saves.

Although England won each quarter, Puerto Rico remained competitive after the opening period and scored eight goals across the final three quarters.

England’s ability to answer Puerto Rico’s scoring runs ultimately proved decisive, allowing the team to protect its lead and complete a composed Pool C victory.
